Gus program

Cooperative agreement proposals are not invited every year. Applicants to the GusNIP program are encouraged to partner and collaborate broadly throughout the healthcare system and the food system.

Mallory Koenings, Ph. Helen Chipman, Ph. Project Types Pilot Projects — new entrants seeking funding for the early stages of program development at less than the county level; Standard Projects — mid-sized groups developing incentive program at the county, multi-county or State level, and; Large Scale Projects — project teams developing multi-county, state-wide, regional, or national incentive programs with the largest target audience of all GusNIP projects.

Each classroom has a certified teacher and an instructional assistant who stress behavior management skills and academic growth. The curriculum parallels the academic expectations of the regular class for reading, mathematics, written language, science and social studies. Students will be expected to complete work at their instructional level. During the course of the day, students are involved in activities emphasizing problem solving, following directions, and social skills.

Social skills training focuses on cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, self-control, and interpersonal relationships. A placement originates with the completion of the GUS Referral form by the student's home school principal. It is the responsibility of that home school to incorporate a behavior plan for at least nine weeks and state alternative interventions that have been implemented and documented in an attempt to keep the student in the least restrictive environment possible.

An observation is completed and recommendations given. If a student qualifies a tentative placement is agreed upon pending a meeting with the parents. The placement decision is made by mutual consent between the school district and the parents. Parents are perceived as a crucial part of their child's success.

Children who have the most success are ones whose parents have the ability and the desire to participate fully in the GUS program. Parents are expected to be available to follow through and reinforce the school program at home, have an open attitude about trying new parenting techniques, and communicate openly with staff. In order to facilitate consistency between home and school, a Plan A and Plan B home procedure is developed.
